Function:

1. Needle Handling: Needle holders are designed to securely grasp and hold surgical needles, allowing the surgeon or dentist to manipulate them with precision and control during suturing procedures.
2. Suture Placement: They facilitate the accurate placement of sutures by holding the needle firmly and providing the surgeon with the dexterity to pass the needle through tissues at precise angles and depths.
3. Tissue Approximation: Needle holders help approximate and align the edges of wounds or incisions by guiding the needle through the tissues in a controlled manner, ensuring proper wound closure and healing.

Working:

1. Selection of the Appropriate Holder: The surgeon or dentist selects the appropriate size and type of needle holder based on the size of the needle and the specific procedure being performed.
2. Insertion of Needle: The needle holder is held in the dominant hand, while the needle is grasped with the non-dominant hand and inserted into the jaws of the needle holder.
3. Closing the Jaws: The surgeon or dentist uses their fingers or thumb to close the jaws of the needle holder, securely gripping the needle between the serrated surfaces of the jaws.
4. Manipulation of Needle: With the needle firmly held in the needle holder, the surgeon or dentist manipulates the needle, passing it through the tissues according to the desired suture pattern and technique.
5. Suturing: The needle holder assists in the precise placement of sutures by guiding the needle through the tissues, ensuring proper alignment and tension for optimal wound closure.
6. Release of Needle: Once the needle has been passed through the tissues, the surgeon or dentist releases the jaws of the needle holder, allowing the needle to be removed from the holder.
